Our Renewable Businesses
Building an energy business for the future
Since BB Energy acquired Solarcentury Africa in March 2021 it has become a key part of BB Energy’s renewable ambition. Solarcentury Africa’s integrated business model means it builds, owns and operates solar projects as well as managing the financial and commercial stages such as equity, debt, power purchase agreements and energy management.
In October 2023, Solarcentury Africa completed its 11.25 MWp solar and 8.5 MWh battery hybrid system at the Balama Graphite Mine in Mozambique. Furthermore, Solarcentury Africa is due to start construction of the 19 MWp Gerus solar plant in Namibia this year and has also received licenses to build a 120 MWp solar plant in Botswana and another 60 MWp solar plant in Namibia.
Solarcentury Africa has over 800 MW of renewable projects under development through exclusive agreements, and an additional 4GW of solar projects in the pipeline.
BB Energy and Solarcentury Africa have plans to become a significant regional power company in Southern Africa through membership of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) which was granted in April 2024.
Since BB Energy acquired Solarcentury Africa it has focused on solar projects in Africa however with global demand for renewable power growing, it plans to expand its horizons to renewable projects beyond the continent, most recently it achieved financial close on a 14 MWh battery energy storage system in Gibraltar.
BB Energy has plans to become a significant regional power company in Southern Africa. Our power trading business took a major step forward in April 2024 when Solarcentury Africa was granted full membership of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) as a market participant. With the support of BB Energy, Solarcentury Africa will build a portfolio of renewable electricity projects which in turn will supply power direct to customers and into the power grid through the SAPP.
In sub-Saharan Africa 600 million people live without access to electricity. BB Energy is committed to playing our part in addressing this shortfall, in line with our commitments to advance UN SDG 7 – ensuring access to affordable, reliable and modern energy.
Our first merchant solar plants are expected start trading through the SAPP in 2025.
Our carbon credit desk and carbon finance activity finance and manage environmental activities which generate carbon credits. Our product trading team creates value by trading the credits created across both mandatory and voluntary carbon markets through both spot and term contracts.
BB Energy remains committed to its aim to become a global leader in carbon credit trading with worldwide access to high-quality projects across segments including household appliances, nature-based conservation and energy efficiency projects.
Our flagship Improved Cookstove (ICS) initiative was launched in Rwanda in 2022. So far it has delivered 142,000 cookstoves and the aim is to distribute 500,000 efficient woodfire cookstoves to rural communities in the various Provinces of Rwanda.
The improved efficiency will: reduce the volume of emissions per household; alleviate deforestation through decreased demand for wood; improve the health by reducing the fumes emitted and create local employment in the manufacturing of the new cookstoves.
We also invest in a range of low-carbon businesses and funds which aim to reduce carbon emissions and promote the use of low carbon technologies.
For example, our downstream distribution company in Rwanda, Société Pétrolière (SP), has invested in Ampersand to facilitate battery swaps for electric motorcycle drivers at our various retail locations in Kigali.
Likewise in India, BB Energy Renewables invested in Sun Mobility an electric vehicles infrastructure and battery swapping platform, which targets the electrification of the micro mobility sector a market that includes 25 million two and three wheel vehicles in the country.
